The court offers jurors several kinds of financial support. You can claim fees for your attendance and costs. For example, the court will contribute to your payments for childcare, public transport, mileage if you use your own vehicle, and parking. The court will respond to any such claim within seven working days. If your claim is accepted, you’ll be paid within two weeks of that response.

Attendance fees
You’ll be paid a fee for attending jury service. Shortly after serving, you’ll receive payment for each half-day you spent at court. You’ll be paid more if you have to stay past 6.00pm. The fee for your time is in recognition of your service. It’s not intended to replace your wage or salary. The fees for jurors are set out below.

Juror fees are classed as “exempt income” for tax purposes. However, benefits might be affected by juror fees. If you’re on a benefit, please contact Work and Income New Zealand. Click on the link below.
In exceptional circumstances, you can apply for an increased jury fee by contacting the registrar of the court where you served.

Car parking is not provided by the court. We will cover reasonable car parking costs if you have travelled to court in your own car and no free parking is available near the court. However, we will not reimburse you if you get a parking ticket.
If you can’t get to court any other way you will need to contact the court to get prior approval before you travel by taxi.
Childcare costs
The court understands that jurors often have family responsibilities that make it difficult for them to attend jury service. You can claim up to $80 each day for professional childcare. Alternatively, you can claim up to $40 (for all children) each day for non-professional help. For example, you might need to pay a neighbour or friend for childcare.
Making a claim
To reclaim expenses, you need to list them all on a single claim form. As proof, you must provide:
- receipts (usually tickets) for public transport
- mileage for your vehicle use (number of kilometres travelled and information about where you travelled from), at a rate of 38 cents per kilometre of travel
- receipts for parking, but not metered parking
- an invoice or receipt for any professional childcare service
- information about the cost of any non-professional childcare you may have organised.
You need to give your completed claim form to the deputy registrar as soon as possible after you’ve served. The court registrar or jury officer will collect your completed form at the end of the trial.
