MMP Referendum
The Government is holding a referendum on our voting system, MMP (Mixed Member Proportional Representation). The Electoral Referendum Act, passed in December 2010 and in force from 1 January 2011, provides for the referendum to be held at the same time as the next general election.

- 15 December 2010 - Bill for referendum on voting system passed unanimously
- 22 November 2010 - Minister of Justice welcomes the Select Committee report on the Electoral Referendum Bill
- 22 April 2010 - the Electoral Referendum Bill passes its first reading.
- 25 March 2010 - the Minister of Justice announces the introduction of the Electoral Referendum Bill.
- 16 February 2010 - the Minister of Justice announces the Government's further decisions on the 2011 referendum on MMP.
- 20 October 2009 - the Minister of Justice announces the Government's decisions on the timing and process for the first referendum on MMP, and any following referendum.
